Police investigating report of gunman atSheridan College
OAKVILLE, Ont. — Halton Regional police are investigating a report of a man with a long-barrelled rifle at Sheridan College.

Tripod sparked Sheridan panic
A tripod likely was mistaken for a "long gun," police said today after ending a lockdown of Sheridan College's Oakville campus and adjoining student residence.

Dr. Robert Turner, president of Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, said officials took the information "extremely serious" and had no choice but to operate as if there was a real threat when a professor thought he saw a young man with a weapon walking through the hallway.

After school officials watched surveillance video of this person, it still appeared that he could have had a weapon, Turner said. At least eight other student witnesses, who described what they saw as a "long, tubular object," came to the same conclusion and alerted campus security. They reported seeing the person walking through the hallway near the library, at the back of the campus around 2:20 p.m.

The person was wearing a camouflage jacket, which raised concerns of the people who thought he might be carrying a weapon, said police inspector Jackie Gordon.

"When you look at the video, there is a possibility that he was actually carrying a tripod, but you have to err on the side of caution," she said.
